How to do an online NTN verification in Pakistan
Online NTN verification confirms that a person or business is registered with the Federal Board of Revenue and shows the details FBR holds against that registration. Enter the CNIC or NTN above, pick Taxpayer Profile Inquiry for the registration record, and the tool returns the registration number, registration date and the RTO the file sits with. This FBR online verification is free, needs no IRIS login, and lets you check NTN online for yourself or for a counterparty. Pick an Active Taxpayer List option instead if you only need filer status.
How to check filer status in Pakistan
To check whether you are a filer in Pakistan, enter your 13-digit CNIC (for an individual) or your 7-digit NTN (for a company, AOP or registered business) in the tool above and select Active Taxpayer List (Income Tax). The result tells you whether that identifier appears on FBR's current Active Taxpayers List. Being on the list means you filed your return on time and qualify for the lower withholding tax rates.
FBR refreshes the Active Taxpayers List every Sunday, and publishes a fresh list for each tax year on 1 March following the end of that year. The list live today is built from tax year 2025 returns.
What your result means
Active (Filer)
Your name appears on the Active Taxpayers List (ATL) because you filed your income tax return for the relevant tax year on time. You pay the lower withholding tax rates on bank transactions, property, vehicles and dividends.
In-Active (Non-Filer)
You are registered with FBR (you have an NTN) but your name is not on the current ATL — usually because the return for the relevant tax year was never filed. Non-filer withholding rates apply, and since the Finance Act 2025 non-filers face restrictions on buying property and vehicles above set thresholds.
Late Filer
You filed, but after the due date. You appear on the ATL only once the surcharge under Section 182A is paid, and for property and vehicle transactions a separate higher 'late filer' withholding rate applies for the year.
No record exists
The CNIC or NTN you entered is not registered with FBR at all. You need to complete NTN registration in IRIS before you can file a return or appear on the ATL.
FBR NTN check by CNIC — which number do I enter?
This trips up most people. If you are an individual — salaried, freelancer, pensioner or sole earner — your NTN is your CNIC. Enter the 13 digits without dashes and select CNIC as the identifier type. FBR stopped issuing separate NTN numbers to individuals years ago.
A separate 7-digit NTN is issued only to companies, associations of persons and registered sole proprietorship businesses. If you run a registered business, that business has its own NTN distinct from your personal CNIC, and the two can have different ATL statuses.
Not registered at all? You will need to complete NTN registration before you can file or appear on the list.
Only need to know whether a taxpayer is Active or In-Active right now? The filer status section above covers the ATL status check, filer vs non-filer withholding rates and what to do when you are still showing In-Active after filing.
Other official ways to check your status
This tool is a convenience layer. FBR provides these free channels directly:

FBR online verification

Download the full ATL
FBR publishes the complete Active Taxpayers List as a downloadable file each week, useful for withholding agents checking many counterparties at once.
What being a non-filer actually costs
Withholding tax rates for filers and non-filers under the Income Tax Ordinance 2001, as amended by the Finance Act 2025.
| Transaction | Filer | Non-filer |
|---|---|---|
| Cash withdrawal above Rs 50,000/day (Sec 231AB) | 0.6% | 1.2% |
| Profit on bank deposits / savings (Sec 151) | 15% | 35% |
| Dividend income (Sec 150) | 15% | 30% |
| Sale of immovable property (Sec 236C) | 3% – 4.5% | 10% – 11.5% |
| Purchase of immovable property (Sec 236K) | 1.5% – 2.5% | 10.5% – 18.5% |
| Motor vehicle registration (Sec 231B) | Standard rate | Double the standard rate |
| Prize bond winnings (Sec 156) | 15% | 30% |
Property rates vary by transaction value slab. Beyond the rates above, the Finance Act 2025 restricts non-filers from purchasing property and vehicles above prescribed thresholds and from certain banking activity.
I filed my return but I am still showing In-Active
Work through these in order — one of them is almost always the answer.
You filed for the wrong tax year
The ATL published during 2026 is built from tax year 2025 returns. Filing your tax year 2026 return early does not put you on the list that is live today.
You filed late and have not paid the surcharge
Under Section 182A, a late filer stays off the ATL until the surcharge is paid — Rs 1,000 for an individual, Rs 10,000 for an AOP and Rs 20,000 for a company. Pay it in IRIS and you are added at the next weekly update.
The list has not refreshed yet
FBR updates the Active Taxpayers List every Sunday. If you filed or paid the surcharge mid-week, allow until the following Monday before assuming something is wrong.
Your return was saved but never submitted
A draft return in IRIS does not count as filed. Open the return and confirm it shows a submission acknowledgement with a date and reference number.
You are searching with the wrong identifier
For an individual, the NTN is your 13-digit CNIC without dashes. A 7-digit NTN belongs to a company, AOP or sole proprietorship registration — searching one when you need the other returns no record.
Stop paying non-filer rates. Personal tax filing starts at Rs 1,999Rs 1,599Save Rs 400.
